Bone Broth Recipe - for Dogs & Cats

Bone broth is an excellent addition to a homemade meal for dogs and cats.  It can be included in the meal as a flavour enhancer by mixing it in, or simply pouring it on top.  The multi-mineral nutrients are beneficial when our pets are feeling under the weather or are older in age and could use the extra nourishment. If your pet has lost their appetite, a little bit of warmed broth may help them feel better.
Below are 2 bone broth recipes.  One made with Beef and the other with Chicken.

Beef Bone Recipe

Step 1:  Place raw or leftover beef bones in a large pot or slow cooker with 8-10 cups of water.  Or just until the bones are covered.  You can also include a beef roast (we’ve used a venison roast in our slow cooker).  For dogs:  Vegetables could also be added (sweet potato, carrots, celery, squash, pumpkin, or parsnips).

Step 2:  Add 1 Tbsp of vinegar (unfiltered apple cider vinegar or whatever is available).  This will help to extract the minerals out of the bones and into the water.

Step 3:  Bring to a boil, then lower the temperature and let simmer for at least 2 hours.
Slow cooker:  Turn on to low setting and let cook for up to 8hrs.

Step 4:  Turn off the heat and remove the cooked bones and discard them (feeding cooked bones can be dangerous, as they can splinter and become lodged in the digestive tract).
Remove the meat and vegetables if included and set aside. The meat and vegetables can be used in the U-Stew for Dogs or U-Stew for Cats recipes.
*Please note that the vegetables should only be used in the dog food recipes.

Step 5:  Pour broth into glass jars and let it cool.  Serve to your pets once it’s cool enough and place the remaining amount in the fridge or freezer for later use.

Chicken Broth Recipe

Step 1:  Place a whole chicken or leftover chicken bones in a large pot or slow cooker with 8-10 cups of water.  Or just until the bones are covered.

Step 4:  Turn off the heat and remove the whole chicken or bones and veggies from the broth.
De-bone the chicken once it’s cool enough to touch and separate the bones and meat.  Discard the bones (feeding cooked bones can be dangerous, as they can splinter and become lodged in the digestive tract).
The meat and vegetables can be used in the U-Stew for Dogs or U-Stew for Cats recipes. *Please note that the vegetables should only be used in the dog food recipes.
